All 16 kitchen redesign questions answered

What is a kitchen redesign?

Changing how the kitchen works and looks: where the sink, cooker and fridge sit, how much worktop and storage you get, and the doors, colour and worktop. It can be as small as a respray or as big as a new layout with a wall taken out.

How does the free Redesign Studio work?

Take or upload a photo of your kitchen, then choose the layout, style, door colour, worktop and finishing touches. Add your first name, mobile and county, and the Studio draws your redesign on your own photo in about 20 seconds. Ask the AI designer for changes and flip between versions. It's free. If you tap Get this kitchen priced, we pass your design to one kitchen fitter who covers your area, who rings you to measure up and quote.

Is the Studio picture what my kitchen will look like?

It's a preview drawn by AI on your own photo, not a design drawing, a survey or a guarantee. The fitter who measures up checks what fits the room, where the plumbing and electrics are, and what it costs.

How much space does a kitchen island need?

1200 mm between the island and the other units on every side you walk, plus the island's own depth. Less than that and a peninsula off the end of a run works better.

How much does a kitchen redesign cost?

From €700 to €1,000 to respray a small kitchen, €1,350 to €5,000 for new doors, drawer fronts and a worktop on your units, and €9,000 to €20,000 for a new mid-range kitchen. Moving the sink, cooker or a wall adds to it. Our full price guide.

How long does it take?

A respray is one to three days. New doors and a laminate worktop, two or three days. A new kitchen is three to five days of fitting, two to three weeks with tiling, electrics and plumbing.

Will the house be a mess?

Less than you'd think if the units stay: a respray is done mostly off site, and the doors come back finished. A new kitchen means a few days without one. Ask the fitter how they protect floors and take away the old kitchen.

Do I need planning permission?

Not for work inside the house, as a rule. Interior works are exempted development unless the house is a protected structure. Taking out a wall still needs a structural engineer.

Is the work guaranteed?

Ask for the guarantee in writing before you agree a price: what it covers (doors, hinges, worktop, workmanship) and for how long. Electrical work comes with a registered electrician's certificate.

Who will ring me?

One kitchen fitter who covers your area. Your number isn't sent to a list. They ring you within one working day, ask about the room and what you want to change, and arrange to measure it before giving you a written price. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

How do I know whether my existing kitchen cabinets are good enough to keep for a reface or respray?

Open the sink base unit and the cupboard beside the dishwasher: if the 18mm chipboard sides, cam-and-dowel joints and shelf peg holes are dry, square and firm, your carcasses can take a respray (€1,200–€3,000) or new made-to-measure doors and quartz worktops (€3,500–€7,500). If the bottom board under the sink has swollen, crumbled or sagged, replacing the boxes is better value.

Can I change the layout or add an island without replacing every cabinet?

Yes, if you are respraying or refacing the wall run cleanly, a carpenter can build a new freestanding island or breakfast peninsula in the middle of the room and spray both the existing units and the new island in contrasting two-tone colours.

How much room width do I need to swap a U-shaped kitchen for an island layout?

A comfortable island layout needs 600mm for the back wall units, at least 1,000mm for the working aisle, at least 900mm for the island depth, and 900mm–1,000mm behind the stools — roughly 3.4m to 3.6m of clear room width.

How long am I without a working sink when switching to quartz worktops?

When fitting new quartz or porcelain stone counters, the stone templater laser-measures the levelled base units on fitting day and manufactures the slabs over 5 to 8 working days. Installers can leave your old sink and hob temporarily connected on a ply board during that week so you can still cook and wash up.

Do I need a Registered Electrical Contractor to move kitchen sockets or add an induction hob?

Yes. In Ireland, adding a dedicated 32A or 45A radial circuit for an induction hob, moving cooker switches or wiring new island floor sockets is controlled electrical work that must be tested and certified by a Safe Electric Registered Electrical Contractor.

Can the AI Kitchen Studio redesign an awkward L-shaped or small galley kitchen photo?

Yes — take a landscape photo standing in the doorway in daylight so the walls, window and floor are all visible. The Studio keeps your room's exact window, walls and perspective while showing how Shaker, handleless or wood-grain units and new worktops will look.
