Why the range is so wide

A redesign can mean a new colour or a new room. Four things move the price most:

  • Whether the units stay. Cabinets are the biggest single cost: €5,000 to €10,000 in a mid-range kitchen.
  • Whether the sink, cooker or walls move. Plumbing, electrics and steel go on top.
  • The doors. On one small kitchen, laminate instead of sprayed lacquer doors took over €2,500 off the price.
  • The worktop. Laminate is €50 to €100 a metre, quartz €300 to €750 fitted.

Two real quotes, and what they left out

A new kitchen in a Dublin semi came to about €12,100 with VAT, including taking out the old kitchen and making good. A 7.3 metre run with full-height units, lacquered doors and a quartz worktop came to about €15,900 with VAT, and that one left out the removal, the skip, electrics, plumbing, tiling and painting. Compare what's in a quote, not just the total.

What to ask before you compare prices

  • Is VAT included?
  • Is taking out the old kitchen and the skip included?
  • Are the plumbing and electrics included, and who does them?
  • Are the worktop, appliances, tiling and flooring in the price?
  • Who measures, and when is the price fixed?
