Kitchen Island Redesign

Does an island fit, what should go on it, and what it adds to the price. Measure first.

Free, no obligation. One local fitter prices it, not five.

Short answerYou need 1200 mm clear between the island and the units on every side you walk. An island adds €2,000 to €5,000 in a family home, more with a sink or hob.

The one measurement

1200 mm between an island and the other units, on every side you walk. Add the island's own depth and you have the width the room needs. It's the one thing a redesign can't fudge.

  • 1200 mmclear between the island and the units, every side you walk
  • 250 mmworktop overhang before it needs extra support
  • 400 mmworktop between hob and sink, if both go on the island

A quick check for your room

Measure across the room from the front of the units on one side to the wall or units on the other. Take off 1200 mm for each walkway and see what's left for the island. If it's less than a standard base unit's depth, a peninsula off the end of a run does the same job with one walkway instead of two.

What goes on the island

  • Nothing plumbed or wired: the simplest island, a worktop on units with seats on one side.
  • A sink: new water and waste runs under the floor, €500 to €1,500.
  • A hob: a new circuit and extraction over or through the island. Gas only by a Registered Gas Installer.
  • Sockets: useful, and still electrical work for a registered electrician, with a certificate.

What an island costs

€2,000 to €5,000 on top of the kitchen in a family home. Big open-plan rooms with an island, stone throughout and integrated appliances go above €25,000 with VAT.

Questions people ask

How much room do you need for a kitchen island?

1200 mm between the island and the other units on every side you walk, plus the depth of the island itself.

How much does a kitchen island cost in Ireland?

€2,000 to €5,000 on top of the kitchen. A sink or hob on the island adds plumbing or electrical work.

Is a peninsula better than an island?

In a room too narrow for two walkways, yes. It gives the worktop and the seats with one walkway.

Who will ring me?

One kitchen fitter who covers your area. Your number isn't sent to a list. They ring you within one working day, ask about the room and what you want to change, and arrange to measure it before giving you a written price. Nothing is booked until you say yes.
