Kitchen Redesign Glossary

15 technical terms, cabinet specs and Irish building rules on a kitchen quote, explained in plain English.

Free, no obligation. One local fitter prices it, not five.

18mm Moisture-Resistant Carcass (MFC)

High-density melamine-faced chipboard cabinet boxes built with 18mm sides, tops, shelves and solid 18mm backs edged in 2mm ABS tape so the units stay square under heavy stone worktops.

2-Pack (2K) Polyurethane Cabinet Lacquer

Catalysed furniture coating sprayed onto MDF or solid ash doors in a temperature-controlled booth that cures into a hard, steam- and grease-resistant satin or matt finish.

Appliance Bank (Tall Housing Run)

A floor-to-ceiling run of 2,150mm–2,400mm tall larder housings that groups the built-in eye-level single oven, combi-microwave, warming drawer and integrated 70/30 fridge-freezer on one wall.

Belfast / Butler Ceramic Sink Cut-Out

A deep apron-front fireclay sink supported on a reinforced base cradle with polished stone cut-outs and routed drainer grooves in the surrounding quartz or porcelain worktop.

Concealed Soft-Close Pan Drawer Runners

Full-extension undermount steel drawer runners rated to 40 kg–70 kg per drawer that let deep saucepan and crockery drawers glide out completely and close silently.

Digital Laser Worktop Templating

On-site laser measurement taken after the new base cabinets or existing carcasses are levelled so 20mm or 30mm quartz and sintered stone slabs fit out-of-square walls to within 1.5mm.

Door-and-Worktop Reface (Keep the Boxes)

A redesign route where sound existing 18mm cabinet boxes stay on the wall while every door, drawer front, hinge, end panel, plinth, cornice and worktop is replaced.

Ducted Extraction (Part F Ventilation)

Rigid 125mm or 150mm ducting piped from the cooker hood or downdraft hob through an external wall core-drill to meet Irish Building Regulations Part F minimum 60 l/s intermittent kitchen extract.

Filler Scribe Piece

A 30mm–75mm colour-matched panel planed on site to the exact lean and plaster wave of an Irish kitchen wall so end drawers and appliance doors open without scraping the reveal.

First-Fix Electrical & Plumbing Elevations

Dimensioned wall drawings prepared after the home survey showing exact 32A/45A cooker isolation switches, above-counter double sockets, under-cabinet LED drivers and 40mm waste falls.

In-Frame vs Lay-On Shaker Door

In a lay-on Shaker kitchen the door closes onto the front edge of the 18mm carcass; in an in-frame kitchen the door sits inset inside a solid 28mm timber frame fixed to the cabinet face.

Island Walkway Clearance (1,000mm–1,200mm)

The clear floor width left around a kitchen island or peninsula so an open 650mm dishwasher door or oven door never traps someone cooking or walking past.

Pocket-Door Breakfast Pantry

A double tall larder unit whose doors hinge open and slide back into slim internal side slots, keeping the kettle, toaster and coffee machine plugged in on an internal stone shelf.

Two-Thirds VAT Rule (13.5% vs 23%)

Irish Revenue rule under which supply-and-fit built-in kitchen cabinetry and worktops take the 13.5% reduced VAT rate provided the ex-VAT cost of materials stays below two-thirds of the contract price.

Working Triangle & Three-Zone Layout

Planning the cold food store (fridge and larder), wet prep zone (sink, bin and dishwasher) and hot cooking zone (hob and ovens) so prep moves in one short sequence without crossing traffic.
