Small Kitchen Redesign

More worktop, more storage and more light out of the same few metres. Ten moves and what they cost.

Free, no obligation. One local fitter prices it, not five.

Short answerUse 370 mm deep units where 600 mm won't fit, drawers instead of cupboards, wall units to the ceiling on one wall only, and light finishes. A new small kitchen lands near €12,000 fitted with VAT.

Start with what you use

A small kitchen can't hold everything, so a redesign starts with a list: what you cook, what you store, what you'd give up. A kettle, toaster and microwave on the worktop can take a third of a short run.

Ten moves for a small kitchen

  1. Shallow units, 370 mm deep, where 600 mm ones don't fit.
  2. Drawers, not cupboards, in the base units. You see everything from above.
  3. Wall units to the ceiling on one wall, none on another.
  4. One tall unit for the oven and fridge-freezer, at the end of a run.
  5. A single-bowl sink with a drainer you can cover.
  6. Keep 400 mm between hob and sink as the main work space.
  7. Light worktop, light doors. One colour for walls and doors makes edges disappear.
  8. Handleless or slim handles in a galley so hips don't catch.
  9. Lighting under the wall units. A small kitchen is usually a dark one.
  10. A fold-down table or a shelf-height breakfast bar instead of a table that blocks the floor.

What a small kitchen redesign costs

A respray of a small kitchen of up to 10 doors is €700 to €1,000. New doors and a laminate worktop on your units come in near the bottom of €1,350 to €5,000. A new small fitted kitchen with VAT lands around €12,000, and choosing laminate doors over sprayed lacquer took over €2,500 off one.
